Our client, the Heinrich Böll Foundation (‘the Foundation’) is a German political foundation based in Berlin and forms part of the German green movement. The Foundation operates more than 32 offices world-wide. Their main tenets are ecology and sustainability, democracy and human rights, and social justice. In April 2019, the Foundation has opened a new regional office in Wong Chuk Hang, Hong Kong. ‘Heinrich Böll Foundation, Asia Global Dialogue’ will focus on identifying technological and societal trends and larger environmental and economic developments in the wider Asia region to provide relevant audiences in Germany and Europe with in-depth analysis and opportunities for learning and exchange.

About this job:

We are seeking a full-time Researcher / Programme Manager to perform a range of tasks including implementing and coordinating research, publications and activities in the programme area: Impacts of transformative technologies and digitisation on societies, politics, ethics and rights (including artificial intelligence, robotics, synthetic biotechnologies, reproductive technologies, genetics, and technological interventions in nature).

The Foundation seeks a Programme Manager who is

  •  interested in the social, political and human rights dimensions of technologies and digitalisation that have wide-ranging transformative impacts on societies, social and economic interaction, gender-relations, the environment and the future of species, the future of work, future mobility, and democratic participation;
  • able to provide analysis to some or all of the above areas, including but also beyond technical aspects;
  • excited about the opportunity to be part of building a new programme and communicate knowledge and analysis about trends and developments in Asia to German and European audiences;
  • work closely with the Director and Deputy Director to liaise and network in the region and to provide ongoing analysis for the relevant sector(s); conceptualise and implement research and publications;
  • manage small grants to project partners;
  • organise and participate in conferences and workshops;
  • contribute to internal documentation, reporting and newsletters as well as strategic planning and evaluations;
  • deal with both casual visitors and those on organised programmes;
  • provide support to the Director as may be requested from time to time.

Requirement:
  • Minimum of 3 years of research and publications experience and/or work experience in at least one of the above mentioned sectors.
  • Postgraduate degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience in the non-profit sector would be an asset.
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) and Mandarin (reading and spoken) are essential; an ability to work in a second Asian language (Japanese or Korean) would be an asset.
  • Strong writing skills and academic accuracy are required.
  • The ideal candidate will work pro-actively and is able to perform and prioritize multiple tasks
  • Proficiency with online tools for research, publishing and communication would be an asset.
  • Readiness to travel internationally.
